By connecting to RSS feeds from news outlets, blogs, weather services, and more, you can create dynamic displays that automatically update with the latest content. This feature is perfect for creating news tickers, information boards, or personal dashboards that keep you informed without manual intervention.
This tutorial will guide you through understanding RSS feeds and using the RSS function in SenseCraft HMI to display content on your device.
This article will use the reTerminal E1002 as an example to explain how to use this feature on the SenseCraft HMI platform.
Understanding RSS
Section titled “Understanding RSS”What is RSS?
Section titled “What is RSS?”RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a standardized web feed format used to publish frequently updated content such as:
- News articles
- Blog posts
- Podcasts
- Video updates
- Weather forecasts
- Stock market data
RSS feeds allow users to stay updated without having to visit each website individually. Instead, new content is automatically delivered to your RSS reader or, in this case, your SenseCraft HMI-enabled device.
How RSS Works
Section titled “How RSS Works”- Content publishers (websites, blogs, news outlets) create RSS feeds that contain their latest content in a standardized XML format
- Feed readers (like the RSS function in SenseCraft HMI) regularly check these feeds for updates
- When new content is published, the feed reader retrieves and displays the updates
Benefits of Using RSS
Section titled “Benefits of Using RSS”- Real-time updates: Get the latest information without manual refreshing
- Content aggregation: Combine multiple sources in one display
- Filtered information: Only receive the content you’re interested in
- Bandwidth efficient: RSS feeds contain only essential content, not full web pages
- No advertisements: RSS typically delivers clean content without ads

Test different dither modes:
- “Black and White” mode works best for text-heavy RSS feeds on e-paper displays
- “Full Color” is better for feeds with images on LCD displays
-
Be mindful of image content:
- Some RSS feeds include images that may not display well on all devices
- Feeds with large images may load slower

“Invalid RSS Feed” Error:
- Verify the URL is correct and includes the http:// or https:// prefix

- The feed format might not be compatible (try an alternative feed)
- Try a different, more active feed
-
Content Appears Garbled or Incorrectly Formatted:
- Try a different dither mode
- The feed might contain special characters or formatting that isn’t supported
- Consider using a feed filtering service to clean up the content
-
Feed Stops Updating:
